Titled “Black,” this minimalist ink painting was created in a modern Sumi-e style using traditional ink techniques. Painted under my pseudonym NAH (“There Are No Artists Here”), the piece layers concentric brushstrokes in deep black, muted purples, and earthy browns, creating a circular form that draws the viewer inward.
At the center of the composition stands a solitary female figure, silhouetted against the stark white space. Her placement at the threshold between shadow and light evokes themes of contemplation, transition, and resilience. A single line descends from above, adding quiet tension and symbolic ambiguity.
This painting was sold at a fundraising event, where its meditative stillness and symbolic depth resonated with collectors. Though understated in execution, the piece embodies the philosophy of Sumi-e — that with a few deliberate strokes, entire worlds of meaning can be revealed.
As part of my work under the NAH pseudonym, Black explores the idea of identity, impermanence, and the balance between emptiness and form..
